Story 4
You never know, yet sometimes you
do!!
This is a story about the Power of Our Lord’s Love,
even when we do not know that it ever happened.
Life is one big spider web, the slightest touch is felt throughout
the entire web. It is called ‘The Ripple Effect’,
each one of us create our own ripples with the choices we
make everyday. Most of the time we have no idea the results
of our conscious or unconscious choices/actions. I would like
to share one of those rare times when I actually found out
the result.
It was late when I finally arrived at the hotel, and I really
was looking forward to a hot shower and rest. When I got to
the check in desk I noticed tears in the eyes of a young,
but very overweight, woman who said, “Hello, my name
is Mary, may I help you?” I told her my name. At this
point I said one of the dumbest things in my life “Hey,
didn’t I see you last year in the Miss America Contest?”
Well, she smiled and said “No, but I needed a good laugh.”
As I got on the elevator I waved to her and said, “You
do have a Miss America Smile.”
The next night, as I was preparing for bed, I receive a call
from this same woman at the front desk. Mary asked if I would
mind coming down to the lobby to meet her father. I thought
that this was an odd request, however I said OK. When I got
off the elevator I was met with a hug from a man I had never
met, and all he kept saying was “Bless you my son.”
Then Mary came over and started hugging me, too. After all
the hugging and tears, they explained the reason for their
joy. About 30 minutes before I checked in the previous night,
Mary had asked the Lord to give her a sign that her life really
mattered. She had been planning (for over 2 weeks) on committing
suicide after she left the hotel that night. Of course, I
was startled by these words, but why tell me? Mary said, that
when I made the remark about her smile, she felt it was a
sign from the Lord showing that her life did make a difference.
Then Mary’s father said, “I had to thank the man
who saved my daughter’s life.” I said, “No,
She saved mine.”
For the past year, I had been slowly becoming more and more
depressed. I kept feeling that I was not making a difference
in the world. I had prayed that the Lord would give me a sign
to show me that I still could be an agent for his Love. The
Lord chose Mary, as he had done 2,000 years ago, to remind
me that each of us do make a difference, no matter how small
it might be. Most of the time, we will never know the effect
a simple gesture, a simple deed, or a simple smile, has on
another person’s life. Yet, sometimes you do!!
The Majesty of our Lord’s love lives truly in the small
details of our everyday life.
Thank God!!
